Just make sure it really does have an internal regulator. I have an old
Motorola on mine, which has a little box attached to the back with a
terminal on it, which I took to be an internal regulator. So I just
hooked it right on up to the switch, turned on the engine, and was
pleased to see it start charging the battery. It was very fortunate
that while I was sitting there watching the volts and amperage going
into the battery, I happened to notice that the voltage suddenly started
rising, the current started rising, and the lights started getting
brighter. Once that started happening, it escalated vast, and by the
time I figured out to shut off the switch that supplies power to the
alternator's field, it had risen to 20 volts or more.
Turned out that the little box on the back of the alternator was empty!
No internal regulator at all. I now have a Heart interface on it.
