A pretty simple circuit could be constructed using a mike placed very
close to the source so you wouldn't have to tap into it. There are VOX
kits out there that might suffice. I think Ramsey Electronics has one,
among others. An example is at

Search for VOX. You should find the CPS13 kit for $8.95US. You'll have
to come up with a mike for it though. I'm sure you can find other kits
on the net.
