Perhaps, then, it would be appropriate to choose a monohull that has
positive bouyancy just like the catamaran. Then you could have the
self-righting characteristics of a monohull with the bouyancy
characteristics of an inverted catamaran.
As far as I know, only one manufacturer is making production monohulls with
positive bouyancy. The Etap 39 lists for about $200k, which makes it more
expensive than a similarly sized Beneteau but less than a similar Island
Packet. IIRC, that is quite a bit less than a similar size catamaran.
Unfortunately, it is too expensive for me, so I will have to take other
preventive actions like sealing all the holes in the top of the boat
during heavy weather, so it won't flood significantly between the time
it capsizes and the time it comes back up.
