OK, I know it is generally gospel that the beam of boats on the French
canals is 5m (Beebe et al.)

However, I was wondering if that beam restriction his picking the minimum
beam for most canals or this is the minimum beam for all canals.

For instance, if I need to get up and down the Seine to Paris and back and
then from Bordeaux to the Med through the Canal du Midi, am I still held to
    the 5m beam?

On other words, if you're not going to dally on the smaller canals, is it
possible to take a wider beam boat without going around Spain?

    ciao!
    Daryl.
