An interesting question, say you have a monohull sailboat and the propane
locker vents to windward side of a tack while heeling. Does the propane
roll out the vent line? I would think it would and then the air currents
would also help to dissipate the propane from above. Propane in the bilge
from leaking propane lockers is another story. Just my $.02 and IMHO.

Subject: lv-ab: Another Propane question
I know propane is heavier than air and finally sinks into the bilge, but
just
how long does it remain there? Does it accumulate each time a little bit
escapes from a burner, or does it eventually dissipate into the atmosphere?
If it does dissipate, how much time does it take before you don't have to
worry about it? Hours, days, weeks? The reason I'm asking is that often
when I light a burner or the oven, it sometimes doesn't light right away, or
the lighter goes out, or the match burns my fingers and I drop it before the
oven lights, etc. Also on occasion when disconnecting the supply line from
the tank, (particularly the barbacue supply line) a significant amount of
gas
comes back through the supply line. The locker does vent overboard, so I
don't worry too much, but the vent is about a 1/2 inch above the absolute
low
point. I assume that at some point the propane that collects below this
vent
mixes with air and becomes harmless, but the question is how long does this
take, or is there forever a risk at the bottom of the locker? We do intend
to get an alarm when the kitty permits, but in the mean time just how
paranoid should I be?
