Friends-have just read the post regarding how to roll a cruisng cat. If
you are talking about the older, heavier, shallower designs, Prout,
Catalac, heavenly Twins, Wharram, etc., you probably need something more
than wind or a beam sea. Many of these boats have so little grip on an
aerated sea that they have been documented to surf sideways down waves
and lay a-hull without damage. While I am aware of Prouts that have
suffered problems and others, I bet they all have had problems with
radical sea states and poor handling decisions. These boats have
shallow vee hulls or shallow long keels and drafts in the three foot
range. Heel them over and they will slip sideways long before
capsizing. Putting them bow over a very large breaking sea is another
issue. I have heard of these and other cats and monohulls having
problems pitching forward off waves or running inot the backs of waves
off a surf. Mind you, none of htem go to weather all that good.
