Dear Liveaboard Friends- Here is my experience. I have single handed and
lived aboard a Spencer 35, an older cruiser, sister-ship to Hal Roth's
famous cruiser. I now own but do not liveaboard a 9Mtr. Catalac. I
single hand and double hand with my infant daughter as crew. I have had
both in rough inland waters, Puget Sound in relatively lousy weather.
Here is my measure. For sure, the Spencer was phenomonally better upwind.
Infact, in a blow there are few non-rocket boats that could take it. BUT
you couldn't travel the same distance as you can on the Cat. The heel and
motion would exhaust you on the Spencer. I never would single-hand the
Spencer with a baby. Too much to do and too much to watch out for. The
Catalac, being old fashioned and not having boards nor keels, goes to
windward much poorly but is easy to handle and very well behaved. Like
many other shallow draft cruising cats, she would be driven sideways
before she would ever capsize. As for burying the lee hull, not
physically possible given teh bouyancy involved. Mind you, she does not
do 20 knots, just marginally faster that an older Catalina 30. So given
teh mediocre performance as cats go, I am enamoured of teh sew-worthiness
of the old gal.
Marc
