I bought one of these X10 wireless cameras after my car was stolen recently,
for the dash of the car, and plan to mount one on the mast of the boat too,
    looking down at the deck:

    http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk58a.htm

Several approaches are possible, here's one:

    1. Camera analyzes pixels.
    2. If they change, starts snapping still shots to computer.
    3. Software then makes connection to the net and transfers pictures to ISP
(best if that connection is wireless too).

It can also transmit video and sound.

I haven't hooked it up yet, am told it sees infrared. (Most small cameras do.
With those that don't, you can break out the colored glass filter inside so
they will). So some 50 cent infrared LED's can illuminate the scene so it can
    see in apparent total darkness.

State patrol found my car with only minor damage. Might leave it unlocked, key
in it, timer that lets it run for 10 seconds, so they will fully commit the act
and have no excuses. Meantime I'll have evidence to identify them and put them
away if they are not caught right then.

    Cost was $162 after tax.
