Mark,
Practical Sailor says that 3M has just introduced a new antifouling paint
removal system. 24 grit very open coat paper followed by 80 grit paper. The
only reference is to 3M Marine Center at 651/737-4171. It might be cheaper
to call West or Boat US Tech Support. It is supposed to take you down to a
smooth gelcoat suitable for painting, although they caution about
penetrating the gelcoat - which is what you want to do. This was part of a
sandpaper review and not a test. They do recommend several tested papers for
bottom paint: Carborundum Premier Red, Norton Blue (A975) and Norton
Champagne Magnum (no kidding.) Carborundum was the fastest. Attaching a
vacuum to your sander is best - but in your business, you already know this.
