Try soapy water as a lubricant and coolant. It allows a finer finish and
reduces sandpaper loading in many situations.

that will make heat, melt the rubbery stuff and glue it to the disc. Not
likely to work with soft, gummy stuff. Also, working in cold weather is better
as it makes gummy stuff harder and it sands off better, assuming soapy water for
lubricant.
