One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that your VHF range is very
dependent on the height of the antenna. SSB/ham frequencies "bouce" off
the ionosphere and back to earth, sometimes more than once, giving the user
multiple hops and increasing the range. That's why they're not so dependent
on antenna height. VHF frequencies are pretty much line-of-sight. That's
why the best place for the VHF antenna is at the masthead.
