    Hi list,
We do not have children living aboard with us (ours are grown and gone) but
right now we are in a marina in Key West. There is a boat here that has
been doing some mechanical work and getting ready to take off again. It is
a family of four, Mom, Dad, and two 12 year old girls. The family has been
cruising since the girls were 6. They took off cruising with the idea that
dad would handle the homeschooling, however mom ended up doing it because
dad was always too busy fixing something! (sound familiar?)

Anyway, they have used Calvert and other programs too. I don't know the
    details of the home schooling.

A year ago they decided to settle down and buy a house. They did. The
enrolled the girls in public school and the girls loved it. However the
parents could see within a few months that the peer pressure was starting to
work on the girls.. they were starting to 'talk back' and the parents could
see some problems coming. So... they went back to cruising and home
    schooling.

These girls have been in the same marina as I have since the first week of
February. They are polite kids. They have fun, they run around, swim,
kayak, play with the other kids in the marina, etc. I've gotten to know
them quite well.. they come and check their email on my computer daily. I
think these girls are wonderful, caring people. When the world (or at least
the US) is short of considerate, polite, caring teen-ages, I give my vote to
    home schooling.

The parents do wish they were in an area with more liveaboard kids... and
they will leave for the Bahamas as soon as the weather clears (they've
finished their 'fixing' for now!). And they still talk about settling on
land after a few more years... but the basis they are giving the girls now
will pay off over the years.

I've become a huge fan of home schooling, and when looking over some of the
programs (not in ANY detail) it looks like a great education!!

    Just my two cents worth!
