Good morning folks, although we are not cruising yet, it did get us
interested in home schooling. #1 daughter is in 6th grade and #2 is in 3rd.
Both have gone to public school in TX one year and decided that home
schooling is a better option. They figured out starting between 8 and 9 and
finishing early afternoon was a big plus, also if we wanted to take a day or
week off to go somewhere we could.
We do use Calvert, it's pretty good deal, you get everything you need in a
box, however this year we went with a different Math course (Saxon) and it
is very good. Before you leave your home base I am sure if you check around
there is a home school group in your area. They can provide a lot of
information and support when you first start if you need it. They will also
have info on local book fair happenings.
This year our oldest daughter is pretty much on here own for the day to day
stuff the syllabus is geared towards her. We just check her work over and
give the tests. Pre-6th you will probably spend an hour or two the day
before getting ready (unless you remember all this stuff<g>) and then spend
4 to 5 hours doing it.
I should mention that when the girls went to school they had straight A's
and were always complemented by their teachers. This helped reassure my
wife (who has been doing most of it) that she was on the right track. They
also are active in Girl Scouts and other activities - hopefully to be
replaced by cruising shortly.
If you have more specific questions please feel free to ask !

My wife and I have been very interested in the subject
of home schooling since we dicided to buy a boat and
go crusing.
With a 7 month old we still have the time to finish
saving, buy, refit, and go crusing before it is time
for him to go to school. But it won't be long before
it is time for school. We saw two basic options.
First we could choose our port of call baised on the
best combination of liveaboard friendly marina and
school system quality. Or we could home school aboard
and continue to roam.
There are a number of crusers who use the Calvert
School (http://home.calvertschool.org/) and we have
been keeping up with several crusing journals from
families taking that approach. My two favorite are:
TWL: Cruising aboard Nostrum Again (from the Trawler
World List)
http://www.indiscipline.org/
We have also begun to read about home shooling in
general, just by doing searches on the internet. The
more I read the less guilty and selfish I feel, the
kids who are home schooled seem to do so much better.
(Unless it is just propiganda)
Out of all of the models we seem to like the
corispondence school approach from an accredited
school such as Calvert and their compeditors.
We are a bit concerned about home schooling an only
child with such a different lifestyle, and are
interested in hearing more from parents who are doing
it.
If you hear anything interesting, or find something
exciting please pass it along.
-Thanks
Chris
