    "Trunnels" are short for "tree nails" and are both a viable and historic
    means of fastening beams and planks -- not only on boats but also in houses
    and barns. They have the advantage of using a fastener that is made of the
    same material as the plank and therefore have similar characteristics. It
    is my understanding that, used by knowledgeable and experienced carpenters,
    they are preferable to metal fastenings in many applications.
