We live on board in Hong Kong with two pooches who are "getting on in years"
but have been aboard for 5 years now after the same time and more on land.
OK we live in a Marina so we go walkies for a good trot in the morning but
other than that it is a short walk a few times during the rest of the day.
When we sail we haven't had to take them more than 12 hours from the nearest
land but friends who cruised from here to Kenya have said that the dogs
adjusted well after the first few tense days at sea. Another friend who
cruised with his German Shepherd from South Africa to Hong Kong said Zack
worked it out after he showed the dog where to go!!!!! The mind boggles. I
gather there was always a large bucket available to swoosh everything
overboard when offshore.
The one thing we have found though is that if a dog wears a harness rather
than a collar it is SO very much easier to haul back on board when
eventually pooch falls in/goes swimming from the dock/wherever.
