I sent Herb an email so he would be able to understand the name of our vessel on the radio. It is easier to understand something in poor conditions if you know what you are listening for.
The couple across from us at Port Lucaya had named their boat the genus name of the blue crab. (There's a book named Beautiful Swimmers or something like that about these crabs.) I'm pretty sure that this name is Greek, and is hard to spell and pronounce. They said Herb could never hear them if they called in using that name. So they called in under the name of JOY and had no problem.
Also I gave him an idea of our plans briefly. This gives him an idea so he can plan a little, without being able to hear you too well. But I know he doesn't have much time for email and will not reply.
The folks in Georgetown (the one in the Bahamas) designate one person of the group to call in to Herb for them all.
I also got his snail mail address from his website in order to send him a check of appreciation, because I think he provides this service for free. I don't know how much is appropriate or how much I would use his service, I just guessed.
