Tom:
Compuserve was bought out by AOL. They currently have two versions.
Compuserve Classic which is the old Compuserve and Compuserve 2000 which is
supposed to be just like AOL. Since AOL is the parent company the fear is
that they will eventually move everyone to AOL, which is why I am leaving
Compuserve. The other problem with Compuserve and AOL is that they do not
offer mail forwarding like the others provide.
Most people find that an independent service provider other than AOL or
Compuserve works the best. Then you use whatever browser and e-mail
program you like. There are lots of local ones that have the advantage of
personalized customer service and some of these offer nationwide access or
the big guys like Earthlink, ATT, Worldcom etc.
I keep my boat on Kent Island on the Chesapeake and none of the national
providers have a local number. I use a local service that in addition to
Internet service offers gas, Chinese food, car wash and liquor but also
provides national numbers.
Maybe list members who are happy with their national plans would recommend
specific plans that have provided good service.
