    Roger:

    No doubt, you have already noted this list is loaded with theoritions and
    conjecturists.........among which I number myself.

    That being said, here's a couple of theories from ME.

    1. We are the only nation in the world that STORES hot water...far less than
    energy efficient. Therefore, in favor of efficient space and fuel use iwould,
    if I were you opt for the propane fired demand type hot water heater. ( will
    be installing same on board the 30' Trojan I'm restoring ) This fulfills your
    criteria of being independant and also gives you endless hot water as a bonus!

    2. The reason raw water cooled engines are not good candidates for heating
    water is they run too cold. A Fresh water cooled engine runs at around 180 to
    190 deg, much like your car.
