I agree 100% with Deborah, so I repeat her message. And I suggest
"Bandership" be blocked from the list. There's no doubt in my mind he
manages to exacerbate every situation he's ever been in, and often the email
he answers. Everyone knows power can corrupt, but come on! We've all heard
stories of cops and Coasties abusing their authority. So do doctors,
lawyers, shoe salesmen, presidents and game wardens, you name it. It's a
fact of life. Your boat is considered a BOAT, not your home, so the same
rules do not apply right now. The things you complain about are based on old
laws written before cruisers/liveaboards were considered and land-dwellers
with no idea of what they're doing. Not what we would like, but we are
working to change that, and some changes have been made. If you don't like
it, do what some of my cruising friends have done and move to the Bahamas or
South America. Or work to change the laws here. But don't antagonize every
authority figure you meet. Your tale reads like a bad movie. No one could
possibly get into it with the authorities as much as you describe without
getting in their faces first. Even I know better than to start bitching at
the cop who just pulled me over. Telling a Coastie his white light is out is
like stopping a cop to tell him his taillight is out. You're not gonna make
any friends that way. This group in general puts their lives on the line for
guys like you and me everyday. My question is, how many hours/dollars have
you spent trying to get the laws changed in our favor? Mike has obviously
spent some time doing just that, as have I.
Believe it or not, I whole-heartedly agree with what I perceive is your main
beef, that our boats are not considered our homes. But right now they are
not. I'm doing everything I can to change the laws that regulate that.
However, your reply to Mike is nothing but more innuendo, mildly concealed
threats, insults, and nit-picking of the first degree. And I thought
live-aboards were a laid-back easy-going group!

>Dear List Owner:
I can't believe I have to write this email.
I'm on several mailing lists.
This is the first list I've ever seen where I've seen truly offensive
remarks. And I've been on this list less than 2 weeks. Is it always like
this? What happened to common courtesy for others?
Last week someone actually used the word "asshole". And to top it off, they
used it in reference to members of our USCG. Today, someone used the term
"commie, pinko fag".
Does this list tolerate profanity on the list and disparaging remarks towards
members of our police, USCG and homosexuals? Who/What will be next?
Remember, the "purpose of this list is to be a forum for communication among
people living aboard and those who are thinking about it or are interested".
When I joined the list, I received an email that stated "NB: Persons sending
... abusive expressions will be removed from the list and blocked. ...This
list is meant to provide information needed by people living in boats, not to
be a vehicle for political and ideological debates or invective." Why are
"abusive expressions" tolerated?
I was very excited about the prospects of being a part of this list, but
these people are using poor judgment. When I read comments like that, it
makes me wonder if this list isn't made up of paranoid, ignorant, bigoted and
just plain mean people.
Please don't suggest that I should leave the list if I don't like it. Those
of us who are concerned and offended shouldn't have to leave. I'm writing
this to try and change the list for the better.
