We saw 51 knots on our anemometer yesterday, and 38 today. Our vessel is
berthed in an excellent harbor in Moss Landing, California that is totally
unaffected by wind.
Today, while I was riding up highway 1 from ML to San Francisco to attend
MacWorld, I was mesmerized by the grey seas: huge swells, every fourth one
breaking as far out as I could see, wind tearing the tops of the 16 - 20'
waves off, surf exploding on the shore 30 or 40 feet up in the air - and I
was trying to imagine our teensy 37 footer trying to keep from being knocked
down in those conditions.
Now I'm scared to think about running across this kind of weather on a
planned passage. We would get thrown around a lot and we would stay inside
and be seasick. I think I would have a scrap of sail up, maybe a storm jib
hung on the inner forestay - I think the motor couldn't have enough power
and require too much tending. Heaving to doesn't work well on our fin keel
and spade rudder.
Is there a mantra for this? What have you passagemakers done in these
conditions?
