I have one of these installed aboard my vessel. It is a bag phone without
battery and is called an "Installed" phone. It has a 3 watt transmitter and
I have it connected to a 9 DB Shakespere antenna. It is analog/digital
selectable mode but uses only the low frequency band, and not the high one.
This results in high roaming charges, $1.30/minute, when outside my home
territory. This is because ATT owns low band facilities in Florida, but not
outside Florida where they must buy time from other companies who own the low
band facilities there. High band channels are not subject to this
restriction. I have not been able to find any dual band bag (or, without the
battery, "installed") phones to stop this high roaming charge.
It is infurating that this situation should exist as it is entirely a
political problem, not a technical one. Makes one wish Ma Bell was back. I
have about $600 tied up in a cell phone that I can use only in Florida.
