I (and at least two other liveaboards) installed Wallace 1000 furnances in
our liveaboard sailboats in the early 1980's. They seemed like an ideal
solution: low 12V power comsumption from the quiet squirrel cage fans,
cheap kerosene fuel, outside air for combustion, thermostatic control and
compact size. Unfortunately, they didn't stand up well to 24 hr/day usage
and broke down frequently and regularly. None of us used them for more than
a year or two. I still have the deck vent installed on my boat.

Among the major problems we experienced was failure of the starting circuits
and carboning of the wicks. The dealer (Cook Marine) tried to give service,
but parts were scarce and, I believe, the units just weren't up to the task.
They were designed for use on fishing vessels and may have worked well in
that application but, as primary heating units for sailboats in New England,
    they just couldn't keep up.

I have no experience with the 3000's and don't know what changes have been
made in their design and construction. Perhaps the problems we experienced
have been solved. I would be interested to hear of your experience with the
    3000.
