=>Dory 28 trawler, various 30'+ sailboats. It seems to me that a semi
=>displacement trawler at 15 knots can outrun a lot more weather than sail
=>at 7 kts. I do like the quiet of sail.
No doubt that in coastal or bay conditions a 15 kt trawler could reach and
duck into a spot before a slower sailboat when thunderstorms sweep through.
However if caught in open water, building sea conditions often extend far
ahead of significant observable weather and will overtake you and slow your
progress before you can put that extra trawler or multihull speed to good
use. This is the same argument (that they can outrun bad weather) cruising
cats and tris try to make as an excuse for staying too long in typhoon zones
around the world. Many have found otherwise.
OTOH, a faster speed on passage limits your general exposure to open ocean
conditons. The reality of open ocean voyaging is that you've got to be
able to take the heavy weather.
Most trawler designs are not long range, open ocean, cruising designs. In
fact, there is a sharp divide in the trawler world between "passage makers"
and other trawlers, the price break to make the jump up to PassageMaker is
astounding.
